How I Created a Reverse Decoupage for Halloween Using the all New IOD Cloches Mould

Materials:

  • Clear resin
  • IOD Les Cloches Mould
  • Skull and raven images from Decoupage Queen
  • Decoupage varnish and glue by Pentart
  • Pentart clear glossy Varnish, solvent
  • Black and brass copper paint by Pentart
  • Mirror spray by Pentart
  • Silver and black wax paste by Pentart
  • Honey gold wax paste by Pentart

Steps:

  1. Prepare the Resin
Start by mixing clear resin thoroughly, ensuring no lumps or inconsistencies. Once it’s well-mixed, pour it into your mold, making sure to use a popsicle stick to push the resin into every nook and cranny. This ensures a smooth, bubble-free finish. If you notice bubbles, don’t worry! A quick pass with a heat gun will remove them. Let the resin cure overnight for the best results.

  2. Varnish for Crystal Clarity
After demolding, you’ll notice the resin might look a bit cloudy. Simply apply a coat of clear varnish to bring out the shine and make it transparent again. This step is important, especially for this project, where the clear finish will allow your design to pop. Once varnished, your piece will have a beautiful, glass-like sheen.

  3. Reverse Decoupage for a Stunning Effect
Cut out your skull and raven images, and decide on their placement. Carefully apply decoupage medium to the back of the resin piece, then gently lay down the images. Work slowly and smooth out any wrinkles. Cover the entire back with decoupage medium to create an even look, ensuring no visible lines or shadows appear when viewed from the front.

  4. Paint the Background for Depth
To add dimension, use a small brush and lightly splatter black paint to the back. Follow with a touch of brass copper paint to give the background a rich, metallic feel. For an extra wow factor, paint the backside of parts of the cloche with this metallic paint. When you flip the piece over, the subtle shimmer will shine through and enhance your design.

  5. Apply Mirror Spray for a Reflective Finish
Mirror spray creates an amazing reflective effect, making your piece even more dynamic. Apply two thin layers of mirror spray designed for plastic, then seal the back with black paint. The black helps the mirror effect really stand out, giving your design a polished, professional look.

  6. Add Decorative Details with Silver Wax Paste
Now for the finishing touches! Gently rub silver wax paste onto the raised, decorative areas of the mould. This creates a striking contrast and makes the design pop. To enhance the overall look, follow up with a light layer of honey gold wax paste on any prominent features. This layering adds depth and a touch of elegance.

  7. Final Touches for Depth
Finally, use a small amount of black wax paste to lightly accent the edges and other areas. This adds subtle contrast and helps tie all the elements together. A little goes a long way, so be careful not to overdo it. With each layer, your project will gain more depth and personality.

I hope you enjoyed this reverse decoupage project. You can apply this technique to any theme.  I think I might try a snowman next!
